What we put ‘on’ our bodies, as well as ‘in’ our bodies, is also worth pause for thought.

As part of her holistic healthcare advocacy, Fiona Morris is a fan of skin brushing and scrubs.

Skin brushing and scrubs are a great way to stimulate the lymphatic system and blood circulation, promoting healthy elimination of toxin build up in the body.

Although there are many products available over the counter, it’s easy and fun to create your own natural detoxifying body scrub.

A recipe to try:

¾ cup of ground sea salt (many varieties available in health food shops – try dead sea or pink Himalayan for their mineralising, exfoliant & skin detoxifying properties)

¼ cup of ground culinary sea greens or foraged dried & ground seaweed (for skin conditioning, softening and nutrient benefits)

½ cup cold pressed oil. Use light-textured massage oils, such as sweet almond, grape seed, enough to cover the ground salt and seaweed.

10-20 drops of detoxifying & invigorating essential oils of your choice – try lemon, grapefruit, fennel, peppermint, ginger, rosemary, lemongrass.

Directions:

● Add ingredients to a bowl and blend well with a spoon.

● Spoon into a suitable jar.

● Moisten skin in bath or shower first.

● Massage into skin starting from extremities (hands & feet) and working in circular motion all over the body in the direction of your heart and up to the neck, taking care scrub gently to avoid irritating the skin.

● Rinse off scrub and enjoy the revitalising benefits!

Fiona advises making up batches as required or prepare in advance. Enjoy a salt scrub weekly to maintain healthy elimination. For daily use, try a natural fiber mitt or brush in the bath or shower. For an extra boost to circulation, try a blast of cold water before drying off. Go on – be brave!
